S.A.D.D. – Students Against Destructive Decisions
Easthampton High School SADD is about raising awareness around issues important to youth. We are a highly active group in our school and community. SADD has become a "cool" group to join. A key ingredient in the success of our group is mixing fun activities with serious topics. The group is student run and group member’s ideas are utilized and put into action. Students attend trainings, participate in peer leadership initiatives, organize school wide assemblies and present workshops to other schools on how to initiate activities and get things done. We take pride in student-led initiatives. Creative fundraisers dedicated to a cause are an important part of our mission. From getting tobacco regulations passed in our community through an 84 grant, organizing a prevention week, Concert for a Cause, and being selected to present a youth workshop at the National CADCA conference, our SADD group prides itself on making an impact in the lives of others Easthampton High School SADD meets every Wednesday afternoon at 2:05 in 3rd floor Break Out room. NHS
The National Honor Society is a nationwide organization consisting of students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, service, character, and scholarship attributes. Students who are in this organization commit to twenty hours or more of community service in addition to other extracurricular and athletic endeavors. The service projects we engage in are two Red Cross Blood Drives, the Jolly Jaunt run for Special Olympics, the Easthampton Community Cleanup, Heart walk in Forest Park, helping with the Riverside Industries Silent Auction, and one on one student tutoring. Because students give tirelessly and lead others, they are regarded as ambassadors and are given special recognition during Senior Awards night and for graduation. Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
The Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and work to end homophobia and transphobia.
The GSA provides support, safety and confidentiality to students who are struggling with their identity as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning or those who are experiencing harassment at school because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. Through involvement in the GSA, students feel safe to express themselves and lessen the isolation that LGBTQ students might otherwise experience.
Throughout the year, the GSA works to build community within our learning environment by providing a sense of community and a space for LGBTQ and straight ally youth to build a social network where their identity is respected. Throughout the year, we organize field trips, movie nights, LGBTQ awareness events, days of remembrance and celebration, and leadership development opportunities. The club participates in the annual Northampton Pride Parade and attends conferences.
In addition to support, our GSA works on educating ourselves and the broader school community about sexual orientation and gender identity issues. In 2017/18, the GSA will host a faculty workshop offered through The Safe Schools Program for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) Students (a joint initiative between the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) and the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth cover a particular topic such as LGBTQ history so that they may be strong allies for LGBTQ students.
For more information about the GSA, please contact Mrs. Soverow in the Guidance Department.
